Cover Letter Internal Candidate
I have spent many years recruiting professionals and I have received countless resumes. Many of those resumes had a cover letter or an introductory email (which, if done right, is essentially a cover letter - don"t let anyone tell you different). I have also received many resumes without one. Guess which resumes I read first? I won"t insult you by answering a rhetorical question. Suffice to say, if an employer opens your resume with a clear picture of who you are and why you are sending your resume, they are much more likely to actually read your resume. When you send your resume with a cover letter to a potential employer you are telling them who you are, and the reason you are sending them your resume. This means you need to highlight your achievements and explain why you believe you are qualified for the position. Employers normally receive numerous resume submissions for a single position. Why would they even look at your resume without knowing at least a little bit about your experience and goals first? A cover letter acts as a screening process for potential employers. Think about the times you have received mail with a document inside without any personalized letter of explanation. It is both confusing and unprofessional.

We all know the saying "you only get one chance to make a first impression". We all know it, because it is true. There are no do-overs when you send out a resume. This is it. If you do it wrong you have blown it - so I won"t belabor the point. The cover letter is your chance to make a good first impression. If it is well written and done right you will make a good first impression, and the person about to look at your resume is going to look at it with a positive first impression already in his mind. I cannot stress how hugely important that is.
