Find A New Job - Taking The First Step

Your first step in determining your wants in your next job is to list all of the aspects of your current or previous jobs that you both liked and disliked. List everything that comes to mind including the type of boss you would like to work for, the commuting time, vacation time, opportunities for advancement, co-workers, industry, salary and benefits and whatever else you feel inspired to put down.

Once you"ve got your list, you then should determine which of those "things" you must have in your next job. Don"t be too picky otherwise you may not find any suitable opportunities at all. For any item on your list that was something you didn"t like about a previous job, write down the opposite of that. For example, if you didn"t like your co-workers because they were unfriendly or unsupportive, write down that you would like to work with people you can happily eat lunch with every day.

Your next step is to list anything else that you would like in a new job opportunity even if it"s never been a part of any job you"ve ever held before. For instance, suppose that you"ve always worked in the manufacturing industry but you"re really fascinated by the medical industry and would love a job in that field. List the medical industry as one of your "wants" regardless of whether or not you"ve ever worked for a company in that business. You most likely have skills that are transferable to another industry so don"t let the lack of experience hold you back.

My point is that you need to design a plan before you begin your job search so that you have focus. Otherwise, you may find yourself applying for every job in sight and not really making any progress or worse, landing in a job that you"re really unhappy with. The above steps are a good place to start in developing a strategy for your job search. I"ve been a professional resume writer for several years and I"ve discovered that the biggest challenge that people have with landing employment is that they don"t have a focused plan. Once you have a focus, you can then develop a targeted resume that will help you to land your dream job.
