Over Fifty and Jobless

Not what we planned for ourselves when we graduated from high school 33 plus years ago. Full of hope and dreams and ready to conquer the world we were. All we had to do was get a college degree or learn a skill, stay the course, and wait to enjoy the fruits of the "Land of Opportunity". Our parents and mentors told us to seek employment with a solid company, work hard, live a little for today and to put some away for our golden years. It all seemed like sound advice and wise counsel at the time. Some of us where adventurous and chose to reach even higher. We chose to leverage our education and experience and start businesses. Surely that would speed up our savings process and free us to retire in our fifties.

When writing a resume, you can choose one of three types. The type you choose depends on your individual situation and the job you are applying for. First of all, there is the functional resume, which is the best one to use if you don"t have a lot of work experience related to the specific job, but yet possess the skills required for this job. Many military personnel use this type of resume when they are transitioning to a job in civilian life. A chronological resume is one in which you list your work experience from past to present or vice versa. This is a required section on all resumes, even though it is a resume type all its own. Today, with the advanced technology, many people post their resumes online. This requires a keyword based resume so that prospective employers can scan for a particular qualification or skill.

There are basic points to keep in mind when writing any kind of resume. The employer needs to know how to get in contact with you, so the very first thing you include is your name, address, telephone numbers (home and cell) and your email address. You can include an objective statement and a summary statement of your qualifications in the resume if you wish. When you use a free resume outline from an online site, there is usually information included as well to help you with these two items.

When you start listing your educational qualifications, always start with the highest degree or certificate you achieved. Give the name of the university or college where you attained these qualifications. Then you list any other pertinent training or certifications.

With your work experience, you can start with your present, or most recent position, and work backwards or you can start with your first job and work up to the present. It really depends on what you want your employer to notice first. Once you have that in place, list any activities you do on a regular basis or any associations you belong to. This gives prospective employers a snapshot of you as a person. Include any awards you have received in any of your positions.
