Use your school resources. Look for on campus bulletin boards, read the school paper, talk to your RA, ask an advisor, see someone at the enrollment center, or even just walk into the buildings and ask how another student what to look for when searching for a part time job.

You can use online and other media sources when looking for a part time job as a student. Check Craigslist, Monster, CareerBuilder, and Snagajob. Also look for local newspaper want ads, TV commercials, signs in front of local businesses, and even billboards.

Much like any other job search, a student looking for a part time job should use their connections including friends, family, and local business owners and managers they know to their advantage. These people can often tell you about part time openings and may be able to give you a recommendation to get that job.

So what exactly should a student searching for a part time job keep in mind? Remember that your priority is still classes. Keeping that in mind, search for part time work. Chances are a full time student will not have time to commit to a full time job on the side. Also look for work with flexible hours. You want employers that respect that your priority is with school and that there are times you may have to change shifts to make an exam, class, study group, or tutoring session.

A regular 9 to 5 job will not work for most college students. When looking for a part time student job, find work that allows you to attend classes. For most people that means avoiding work during the week in the late morning or early afternoon hours. Look for jobs that involve early mornings before classes, evenings after classes, or even weekends.

Also keep in mind that most schools let out during the summers and around Christmas. Because of this, you may want to go home. Look for a part time student job that will let you go home when school is out. In fact, some college towns all but shut down when school is not in session. Since so much of the city population is from the school, they will not need the extra employees during the summers. So they may actually prefer to not keep you around during the summers anyway. If you were planning to work during school vacations, make sure these times are available before accepting a job.

Searching for a part time student job can be frustrating, especially these days. But there are plenty of resources available to students willing to search a little. Just know where to look and know what you want and need for your part time student job and you can earn a little extra income while in school.
